In Division II wrestling, it truly doesn't get any better than this.
Minnesota State and Nebraska-Omaha — a bitter NCC rivalry that has a great deal of respect between the programs that don't exactly like each other — will go head-to-head Friday in Omaha.
Aside from the rivalry, the dual itself has a lot on the line. The winner will likely be the No. 1 team in the nation when the new Division II polls are released. Odds are, whoever wins Friday will also take the NCC crown at season's end. The winner will claim a share of the title, at least.
As Jim Makovsky told me Wednesday afternoon, the road to winning a national title goes through Omaha.
In 2006, the circumstances were very similar when MSU traveled to Omaha. The dual pitted the top two teams in DII, just like Friday. UNO beat MSU 22-12 at Sapp Fieldhouse.
MSU's Nick Smith who is one of two MSU active wrestlers that was in the lineup that night. Smith admitted to me an interview outside the wrestling locker room that the Purple Mavericks basically choked.
Speaking of UNO and choking.
Which MSU athletic team is going to figure out UNO when playoff time comes. MSU has started a trend in almost every sport that includes kicking the crap out of the red Mavericks in the regular season, then getting outdone by UNO in the postseason.
Below is the evidence that proves the hard truth:
• '07 WRESTLING: Beat UNO 27-9 in regular season action before finishing fourth behind UNO at the DII National Championships.
• Any year FOOTBALL: MSU could never beat UNO so nevermind that.
• '07 SOCCER: Swept UNO in the regular season than fell to the Red Mavericks 2-0 at home in the Central Region Final.
• '07 BASEBALL: The Purple Mavericks beat UNO three times in the regular season and twice in the NCC Tourney before the Red Mavericks beat MSU 4-1 in the first round of the regional playoffs. The Purple Mavericks were eliminated two days later.
I just realized that I cover three of these sports. Uh-oh, maybe it's my fault that UNO has MSU's number in the playoffs. My apologies to Makovsky, Chris Miskec and Matt Magers.
